MCU: Every Disney+ Series Finale Ranked Worst To Best (So Far)
5. What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath - What If...?
What If...? has easily been the most inconsistent MCU Disney+ series to date. As an anthology where the episodes didn’t particularly link together in one narrative, there was more risk of these standalone stories falling flat. There were some truly outstanding episodes, and some incredible, sometimes surprisingly poor ones.
It wasn’t until the season one finale that things were brought together. To face Infinite Ultron, as the only constant of the previous eight episodes, the Watcher brought together heroes from around the multiverse to create the franchise’s newest super team. This was honestly a little underwhelming.
It could potentially be because the episode that preceded it was one of the standouts of the season, but the finale just couldn’t live up to its billing. All the pieces were there, but something just didn’t quite click in the multiversal crossover.
It could be that as a 'what if' story, fans may have found it harder to connect with the narrative or stakes outside of the main MCU continuity; the reasons for bringing this particular roster together didn’t make a great amount of sense; or that Gamora seemingly showed up from nowhere when everyone already had their own episodes to introduce their characters.
Ultimately, this was far from terrible, but also far from great, with nothing to top the huge fight from one episode previous.
