7. What If... Captain Carter Were The First Avenger?
With the first episode of What If…?, the MCU brought to Disney+ yet another series unique and unlike anything seen in the franchise previously. This chapter detailed Peggy Carter taking the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers, and though the Captain Carter character herself was fantastic, the episode around her felt somewhat underwhelming.
Hayley Atwell gave another strong performance in the MCU as per usual, and the animation style was excellent. However, for a ‘what if’ story, the narrative felt rather basic. The episode was essentially a retelling of The First Avenger, with a few details altered.
Much of the story had been seen before, and with the series’ first outing for all intents and purposes trying to fit an entire movie’s worth of events into half an hour, the pacing felt incredibly rushed, like it was simply a race to the finish line.
There were also several disappointing performances in the voice acting department from MCU alums that you wouldn’t tend to expect it from. Sebastian Stan has been a joy to watch every time he has appeared on screen in the franchise, however for this episode of What If…? it felt like he was at completely at the other end of the spectrum.
