How I Met Your Mother: 10 Unforgettable Running Jokes
9. Telepathic Conversations
First appeared in: 'Mary the Paralegal' It's safe to say that the How I Met Your Mother gang were incredibly close. So close, in fact, that they possessed the ability to carry out entire conversations without saying a single word. And even though the quintet were virtually inseparable for most of the series' run, each member of the group occasionally felt the need to discuss something without the knowledge of anybody else who happened to be present. This gag acted as a reminder that the show's writers were never afraid to stray outside the limits of reality, making the idea of telepathy seem as ordinary as a casual chat over a cup of coffee. Soon enough, these conversations even began to involve people from outside the gang, with one highlight coming in the form of the telepathic dialogue between Ted and Gary Blauman as both tried to impress the same girl with their knowledge of Teddy Roosevelt's autobiography, no less. The gang were still at it by the time season nine came around, with Barney, Ted, Lily and Robin all fawning over Darren's flattery via the dialogue taking place in their heads. This gag came across as little more than an amusing curio when it was introduced, and yet it seems that the gang's inexplicable telepathic link hadn't faltered by the end of the show's nine-season run.
