How I Met Your Mother: 10 Unforgettable Running Jokes

10. Glen McKenna

First appeared in: 'Intervention' Call it formulaic, but the classic sitcom trope of breaking a priceless object is pretty funny when it's taken to the extreme lengths it is here. Let's face it €“ watching expensive stuff break can be hilarious, and pricey single malt scotch whisky Glen McKenna is no exception. We saw bottle after bottle of the expensive beverage shatter on the floor over the years. Ted and Barney each dropped one during their stay at the Farhampton Inn, while Robin and Lily were forced to improvise a substitute out of chocolate syrup and hand sanitiser after breaking one during a Princess Bride-inspired sword fight. Fortunately, there was always enough comic timing here to prevent repeated instances of this joke from becoming stale. After half a season spent trying €“ and failing €“ to secure an intact bottle for Barney and Robin's wedding, this shaggy dog story provided a final flourish when Darren, the slimeball lead singer of The Mother's band €œSuper Freakonomics€, bumped into Ted to send yet another one flying. The result was a neat bit of narrative closure during an otherwise chaotic season, as Ted's response (read: a right hook to the jaw) prompted The Mother to buy him a drink out of gratitude before they had even met. Her choice? A glass of 35 year-old Glen McKenna that, to the group's surprise, had been available at the bar all along.
