Midnight Mass: 10 Best Characters Ranked
2. Sheriff Hassan
Sheriff Hassan is a true everyman in every sense of the word.
Monologues are kind of Mike Flanagan's thing when it comes to how he writes his scripts, and Midnight Mass is filled to the brim with them. However, despite only having two monologues during the show's eight episode run, Hassan's are arguably the most impactful.
Actor Rahul Kohli is another Flanagan alumni who had a major role in his previous major project The Haunting of Bly Manor. Ironically enough, Kohli also delivered the most impactful monologues there as well. The actor just knows how to lend genuine emotional weight to already emotionally heavy writing.
Let's look at their first monologue for proof of this. When Kohli explains to their son, Ali, that miracles don't exist the speech drips with heartbreak. It's not that Hassan is cynical, but rather that, after watching his wife slowly and painfully die from cancer, he cannot allow himself to believe that god picks favorites. He isn't in denial, but rather he has warped his perception of god to fit the only worldview that keeps him waking up in the morning.
Kohli delivers both of their speeches in a way that truly captures their character's pain, allowing for the viewer to get a picture of Hassan that expands beyond the confines of the narrative.
