Monty Python's 5 Biggest Live Surprises

2. Sit On My Face

Although songs were not an uncommon aspect of Flying Circus, many of Monty Python's most memorable numbers came from their albums. Take the Contractual Obligation album for example, track one side one of which began with the pomp and circumstance of fan favourite Sit On My Face. Having never been performed on screen therefore, the first time audiences were able to not just hear, but also see it performed was again Live at the Hollywood Bowl. Here Cleese, Chapman, Gilliam and Jones stood proudly on stage dressed as a barbershop/waiter quartet, and belted their hearts out. Having performed to the audiences delight, they promptly bowed whilst accepting their applause, and turned to leave. Unbeknownst to the audience up until that point, by not wearing any trousers or indeed underwear, they saw rather more than they had bargained for. The song was once again performed at the Concert For George, only this time with an audience aware as to what my come next. In true Python style however, Gilliam and Jones, joined this time by Eric Idle and Neil Innes, still managed to raise the stakes and turned a full 180 degrees to bow to a portrait of Harrison at the back of the stage. In a career well known for being outrageous and even audacious, this is possibly the most amount of cheek the Pythons have ever bared to their audience.
