Mr. Robot: 21 WTF Moments That Left Fans Stunned

While Whiterose has done some truly horrific things in the name of making sure her plan eventually worked, in the four seasons audiences have been watching the show, we still knew very little about how she became the violent criminal she is. However, we got a chance to learn a whole lot about Whiterose's beginnings in this episode.

During a flashback to 1982, we witness Whiterose - who at this point is solely going by her Zhi Zhang persona - working on a deal with IBM in America. While she's in the States with her colleague and secret lover, she finally feels free to share with him that she identifies as a woman. At this moment, we get to see the version of Whiterose that we've come to know.

While it's a beautiful moment between the two lovers, things change when the two are back in China. Whiterose's lover is forced to marry a woman who he doesn't love. While Whiterose tells him to be patient and that they'll eventually make it to America so they can be with each other, her lover simply doesn't believe her.

Distraught at the prospect of never being with the person he truly loves, he slits his throat on his wedding day, right in front of Whiterose. For Sam Esmail and co. to bring us down this road of love and acceptance, only to destroy it in such a devastating fashion is Mr. Robot at its very best.
