The first season of Mr Robot carried one pretty big twist (although some viewers had successfully predicted it before the reveal): the character Mr Robot, as played by Christian Slater, wasn't actually real. Instead, in a Fight Club-esque move, he was a figment of Elliot's imagination, taking the form of a projection of Elliot's father, who had died years before the show is set.

Interestingly, even with the cat out of the bag, Mr Robot is still going to be a big part of the show (okay, his name is in the title, but it's intriguing to think how they'll proceed after giving away the twist). How he fits in is the question now. Elliot knows he's not real, but it seems like he's going to continue to use him when it comes to the tough decisions, the things that the actual Elliot wouldn't do.

Speaking with Indiewire, Slater said that creator Sam Esmail told him "Mr. Robot is to Elliot what the Hulk is to Bruce Banner." So, when Elliot gets angry, except Mr Robot to show up.
