5 Reasons Why Watchmen Season 1 Succeeded
3. Atticus Ross & Trent Reznor's Atmospheric, Unique Score
More often than not, scores for comic book movies and shows go mostly unnoticed. There seems to be a trend of music simply being a necessity, so it's treated more like a requirement rather than an opportunity. As soon as Watchmen sought the talents of Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and long-time collaborator Atticus Ross, it was clear they treated Watchmen's soundtrack as a priority.
Much like this year's excellent Doom Patrol, Watchmen employs an emphatic synth-heavy soundtrack that's pulsing with energy. In every moment of the show, it's either lurking in the background subtly or acting as a scene partner opposite the central character(s). There's a great sense of atmosphere put forth through music alone, allowing the show's writing and cast to shine alongside the music rather than in spite of it.
Forgettable, placeholder soundtracks are by no means a dealbreaker, but a great one can work wonders. Thankfully, Watchmen showed time and again how much of an asset an excellent soundtrack can be.
