5 Reasons Why Watchmen Season 1 Succeeded
4. Making It A Sequel Over An Adaptation
'Ugh, another adaptation? Why?!' Everyone was concerned about the news about Watchmen getting the silver screen treatment because how different could it really be from Zack Snyder's page-by-page 2009 adaptation? A whole lot different as it turns out.
This was likely the toughest decision to make for the creative team, but they thankfully chose correctly. Once everyone was honest about it, a sequel was the only way to take a worthy step forward with the brand, much like the recent Doomsday Clock comic. With this being a sequel, so much more potential was available for its story to progress in new and interesting ways.
Gone are the immediately recognizable elements with a fresh never-before-seen world taking its place. New protagonists, antagonists, and the occasional familiar name and face to pop up unexpectedly. Watchmen successfully took Alan Moore's wholly-distinct alternate reality and thought to ask 'What does that society look like in modern-day?' The answer is illustrated across nine intricate, unpredictable episodes that will only become more impressive with each rewatch. Against the odds, the Watchmen cast and crew managed to add onto a complete story with a follow-up narrative worthy of being linked to the source material.
