By mocking one the streaming service's show-making methods, the series provides a valid commentary on the art of true crime documentaries. American Vandal's satire is successful, as it highlights the flaws of the genre and makes fun of the viewers willing to watch anything that's signified by Netflix and has to do with crime. It also shows great respect and faithfulness to the source material, which is really applaudable.

The title is already over the top, as the only essentially American quality of Dylan is that he's a citizen of this country. The opening sequence is also exaggerated, reminiscent of Making A Murderer, with its serious music and dark colors. The fact that Netflix is willing to stream a show satirizing its other, esteemed series proves that it's very self-aware and has no problem with laughing at itself.
