Netflix's American Vandal Review: 4 Ups & 3 Downs

1. It's Too Long

Jokes are best when they're brief, as repeating the same set of observations/assumptions for three-four hours can really be tiresome if one doesn't enjoy a specific type of humor in the first place. That's why people who aren't particularly big on dick jokes may find the show extremely disappointing - the jokes don't rise above a particular level.

Furthermore, while the series does a great job of satirizing true crime tropes, American Vandal applies the same method multiple times, to present different elements of the story. It has moments of pure genius, like tracing the can of spray paint throughout different student's smartphone footage, but it's hard to shake off the impression that the show would be better served when reduced to three episodes.

That's why the cliffhanger at the end is really surprising. Hopefully it's just another joke and not a legitimate buildup to a second season.
