Netflix Witcher Trailer: 10 Details You Totally Missed
3. Geralt's Emotions Are An Overarching Theme
Another change from the books and games is how Geralt deals with his own history as a Witcher i.e. A child taken off the streets and put through the "Trial of the Grasses", a procedure that strips humans of all emotion, letting them take on the demons of the world without getting overwhelmed.
In the books it resulted in a more forlorn Geralt forever angry at his abilities, getting lost in philosophical thought and ostensibly continuing to "do the work" because, well, what else could he do?
In the games though, this "stripping of emotion" made him into more of a badass archetype. The depth of character was still there over time, but it was doled out far slower.
In the Netflix edition, we hear Yen talk about how "Witchers can't feel human emotion" as Geralt soaks in a recreation of the game's "iconic" bathtub scene.
It seems the show is going to twin Geralt's personal development of emotions and wellbeing with that of finding and taking care of Ciri. A key theme of the books and games, that is yet to be explored in this way.
