Developed by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble, YOU is the psychological thriller story of Joe Goldberg and his obsessive tendencies towards those around him. The first season was premiered in 2018 and was based off of the 2014 novel of the same name. written by Caroline Kepnes.

With twenty episodes and two seasons (with a third season confirmed for 2021) available at the time of writing, YOU has become one of Netflix's most watched and infamous shows. The show has such a unique tone thanks to its main character, played so amazingly by Penn Badgley, and his constant internal commentary stacked full of wit and quips.

Being told mainly from the perspective of Joe, with all of his heinous acts being constantly commentated on and justified by his running commentary, the show has a completely unique way of distorting perspectives and turning what would normally be an outright evil antagonist into somebody to root for.

And this distorted way of viewing characters and actions isn't just limited to Joe, with almost every character in the show being given plenty of shady layers and secrets that make them all a compelling watch. Here is every major character in YOU ranked from worst to best.

10. Ellie Alves

For someone who is meant to be only fifteen when they meet her in the show, audiences will be hard-pressed to find a character more self-confident and quip-heavy as Ellie Alves.

After their father died and their relationship with their mother had soured, Ellie and her sister Delilah moved to Los Angeles and began living in the same apartment complex that Joe would eventually move to in season two. A passionate filmmaker, she draws in Joe's 'care' once he realises she's involving herself with Henderson and later Forty, two of the more unstable individuals the show has thrown up outside of Joe.

As much as she is a victim, and she definitely is, there's no denying the fact that Ellie certainly landed on her feet better than most. Despite the fact that she spent the whole of season 2 mixing with sketchy individuals, ignoring the warnings people around her were dishing out and solo investigating situations she knew were dangerous, she's managed to bag herself a new fresh start out in the world with Joe supplying a steady stream of cash to keep her going.
