Netflix's YOU: Every Main Character Ranked From Worst To Best
1. Joe Goldberg
Everyone's favourite handsome bookstore manager turned stalker, kidnapper and serial killer, Joe Goldberg sort of blends together the roles of protagonist and antagonist in a way never seen before in the world of the television.
Almost everything in the show is shown through the eyes of Joe which, coupled with his internal thoughts being said out loud for the audience, makes all of his terrible actions appear almost justified and this obviously dangerous individual becomes a hero that audiences want to see make it through his trials.
In a way, Joe's charm and witty quips end up snaring in the audience as much as it does the unfortunate people who end up in his crosshairs. Individuals like Candace and Forty, who end up seeing Joe for who he really is, end up being presented as the baddies to the audience thanks to all the rationalising and genuinely funny running commentary he serves the audience.
Penn Badgley explained how Joe was: "the hero of his own story...every serial killer is" and it's important to remember that, however rational Joe sounds to himself, he's not the good guy in the story. Ultimately however his ability to make an audience empathise and even root for him is what really sells YOU as the compelling story it is.
