New X-Files Series: 10 Things Fans Want

6. No More "Scully As The Madonna"

No, not Madonna the pop legend. The biblical one. One of the most bizarre choices the X-Files writing staff ever made was to portray Dana Scully giving birth as some sort of miracle, as a Christ-like event, complete with a star of Bethlehem hanging in the night sky over the birth site. By this point in the show, the producers seemed to be throwing mud at the wall to see what would stick in terms of how to play out the mythology, and since Scully's inability to conceive was widely covered in earlier seasons, a pregnancy would be unexpected - and rile up the "shippers" cheering on the romance between Mulder and Scully. Fanning the flames of fan passion is easy, writing a convincing immaculate conception that doesn't involve the virgin Mary is not. The Madonna Scully storyline fell flat, so flat that by the time the second X-Files movie rolled around in 2008, son William had been killed off (off-screen, with little more than a few lines of dialogue spared to explain his fate). The show had hinted at Scully's biblical connections before, but rather than just portraying her as a woman questioning her faith, they seemed to suggest she had been chosen as some sort of protector by a higher power. In a show grounded by science, albeit it in the realm of extreme possibility, those episodes always felt out of place. When the show comes back, for the sake of the fans' sanity - no more of this!
