Obi-Wan Kenobi Part I & II Review: 7 Ups & 2 Downs
7. Both Episodes Are Genuinely Surprising
Perhaps the most remarkable thing about Obi-Wan Kenobi so far comes from how genuinely unpredictable it's been.
Though the trailer and first episode build-up hinted at the series being focussed on Obi-Wan and his attempts to protect Luke, the show effectively pulls the rug to reveal Leia as the focal point of the Jedi's latest adventure.
This unexpected relationship has its flaws - in A New Hope, Leia's message for aid hints she's never met Obi-Wan - but it also adds great depth to Obi-Wan's journey, and how he's still so loyal to his fallen apprentice.
Speaking of which, Part II's ending surely deserves to go down as one of the Star Wars franchise's most shocking moments, as the Third Sister reveals that Anakin Skywalker is still alive, shaking Obi-Wan to the core before cutting to a ravaged Darth Vader breathing heavily in a bacta tank.
The unexpected relationship between Obi-Wan and Leia, mixed with Vader's stunning return and some elegant cameos from Anthony Daniels' C-3P0 and Tamuera Morrison as an old clone trooper, help both episodes stay wonderfully fresh.
And if that last twist is to believed, the show's got plenty more tricks up its sleeve.
