Orange Is The New Black: 10 Characters More Interesting Than Piper
3. Red
Starting off as one of the most powerful Litchfield inmates, Galina Raznikov, or Red, had something of a fall in season 2, but became a better character for it. Before prison she ran a restaurant and bakery, and had ties with the Russian mob, and in prison she ran the kitchen until her drug smuggling business was discovered. Although used to seeing the cold, dominant side of her, season 2 reunited her with old enemy Vee, which turned her into an underdog and victim. She also has an obsession with the chicken that can occasionally be seen roaming around the prison grounds. Kate Mulgrew was, along with Laverne Cox, nominated for an Emmy back in 2014, back when the show was considered a 'comedy' (it now falls under 'drama'), and she does a lot to sell the menacing-yet-soft nature and dark humour of Red.
NCTJ-qualified journalist. Most definitely not a racing driver. Drink too much tea; eat too much peanut butter; watch too much TV. Sadly only the latter paying off so far.
A mix of wise-old man in a young man's body with a child-like wonder about him and a great otherworldly sensibility.
