Orange Is The New Black Season 5 Review: 7 Ups And 4 Downs
1. The Humor
The premise of the show should make it hard for the writers, directors and producers to create great, comedic moments. However, while dealing with serious issues and set in rather harsh conditions, Orange is the New Black is able to remain one of the funniest shows around.
The reason for that is the creators' ability to present different kinds of humor thanks to the plethora of characters starring in the show. The humor stems from references, misunderstandings, allusions or just general interactions between the characters.
And there's plenty of the last one to choose from: the passive-aggressive relationship between Caputo and Fig, Marisol and Flaca's cute vanity or Angie and Leanne's constant attempts to get high on any kind of substance, just to name a few. Most of the characters are complex, not black and white, which makes each one able to make produce a funny moment.
Instead of forcing jokes, some even come in the form of throwaway lines, which makes them sound natural. That's also why the jokes land well and are never out of character.
Now onto what wasn't so good in Season 5...
