After the Byrdes move into their new home in the Ozarks, the aging and ailing Buddy is still residing there dying from heart disease. He is grumpy and unsociable and just wants to be left alone in what time he has left.

Buddy has a criminal past that is alluded to often, a mutual respect develops between the older Byrdes and Buddy as they all rationalise the illegal actions they've done in the past and present. Buddy soon begins to open up to the Byrdes and is accepted into their family.

Buddy grows close with Jonah in particular developing into a protective and sweet relationship. Buddy teaches him how to shoot a gun and the two of them share a genuine bond.

After helping Wendy burn the Snell's opium poppy farm, Buddy passes away peacefully in her car. His final moments were touching and his insistent skinny dipping brought a great deal of levity to an often humourless show.
