Aziz Ansari is undoubtedly an actor who knows how to take full advantage of the roles that come his way. This could be seen so clearly in his role of Tom Haverford, and it ended up generating a character who was somewhat divisive for audiences.

On the one hand, Tom Haverford was amusing. He easily had some of the best moments of the series when it came to character humour, as his wannabe media mogul persona gave him an inflated sense of grandeur that led to many hilarious moments.

Additionally, he develops a lot within the show, as he slowly, but surely, loses some of his immaturity and begins to feel more like an adult. He even found success with some of his ventures, too, and no matter what went wrong Tom always picked himself back up, which made him admirable.

However, the darker side of this character came in the fact that he could be offputtingly selfish. There were multiple occasions where Tom would prioritise himself over those he was supposed to be helping, and it made him detestable at times.

The series would often try to justify this by revealing his motives, but a true friend wouldn't ruin another's opportunities due to their own insecurities.
