Peep Show Series 9: 9 Things We Hope To See

5. An Open Ending

In this article with the Radio Times, series co-writer Sam Bain states "We will be doing series nine, we are not sure exactly when. We don't plan to kill them off so the opportunity to do more would be there if we chose to.". This leaves us with an indication of where they plan on going with the final series. It was always a given that they won't kill off the main two characters, it is after all not that kind of show - though one could argue the same point about comedy classic 'The Young Ones' - so an open ending was always on the cards. An open ending is great for the writers and indeed for David Mitchell and Robert Webb, it gives them the opportunity to come back to the series years down the line should they feel there is sufficient demand for it. Barring spectacularly misjudged misdirection from Bain, this leaves us to ponder exactly how they will go about ending the series. The most likely scenario seems to be a parting of the ways between the two friends. Though they have always been depicted as an 'odd couple', there is a synergy to their relationship that allows them both to function higher than their stations in life. This makes it difficult to believe there will be a major falling out between the two but given their respective ages it would be logical that at some point being flatmates wouldn't cut it anymore and they would need to move on with their lives.
