Pennyworth Trailer Reactions: 5 Ups & 1 Down

Downs...

1. It Might Not Appeal To Comic Book Fans

While the realistic period vibe certainly appears to work for Pennyworth, that might also end up working against it.

No matter what the show goes onto become, it doesn't change the fact that it has been spawned by a comic book and, at the moment, it just doesn't look like it. Though that's certainly not a bad thing (the best comic book shows often opt for realism these days), it does risk alienating fans of the source material because, other than Alfred and Thomas Wayne, there aren't any other iconic Batman characters to work with.

To use the Agent Carter example once more, that show was of an incredibly high standard and yet its realistic standalone approach (not-to-mention period setting) set it so far apart from Marvel's Cinematic Universe that its ratings inevitably suffered - which eventually led to its cancellation.

Of course, it's far too early to make assumptions like this, especially before the pilot episode has even aired, but it is worth bearing in mind just how many comic book fans make up the show's core audience.
