Peter Capaldi: As Whovians React To 12th Doctor
On 4th August the entire Doctor Who fandom was on tenterhooks, barely able to cling on to their seats. This was it; this was Matt Smith saying goodbye and handing the TARDIS key on to a successor. Fans of the show, old and new, dropped everything for the big announcement. All normal activity - if you are a Whovian - ceased for the duration of the Big Reveal. I clearly remember that Matt Smith's casting angered me when he was announced as the next Doctor. Not because I was hung up on Tennant (I wasn't and I still don't rate him in spite of enjoying many of his episodes) but because - for me at least - the casting of such a young actor defied convention. What had happened to the eccentric uncle/grumpy curmudgeon of a Doctor that I'd grown up with? Fortunately for the show, the gamble paid off and Matt more than made up for his young years; believing that he was a 900+ year old Time Lord became easy, and his enthusiasm for the part has been infectious. Whoever was to take over had some very big leather boots to fill. Enter Peter Capaldi. I shan't pretend to know anything about this man's acting history other than remembering him from Fires Of Pompeii and Children Of Earth, but from those roles alone I know that he has talent. I also feel that it's high time that we had an older Doctor. After all, with everything that the Eleventh Doctor has been through, the Twelfth surely should be older; the experiences of Eleven would age and change anybody from the inside out. As usual the fandom is divided in opinion. Some embrace Capaldi, but younger, new fans are lamenting the end of young and sexy - and being extremely loud and unpleasant about it. Personally I adore Chris and Matt, but when I was a child The Doctor was never sexy and he was never supposed to be. I feel that the show is returning to its roots, which I feel is a good thing. Therefore, I embrace Capaldi's casting in spite of knowing very little about him. As much as it will hurt me to have to say goodbye to Matt, I am excited about the upcoming new era. Just give Eleven a noble and respectable death, eh Moffat? As Eleven has said, we are all stories in the end, but make his a good one please. Readers, what do you think of Moffat's decision to return to an older actor?
