14. You Win or You Die (Season 1, Episode 7)
This is the episode where everything hits the fan, setting up the events to come. King Robert succumbs to his wounds and dies and Renly tries to stage a coup, but Neds honor forces him to refuse. He renounces Joffreys right as king, before being betrayed by Littlefinger at the very end of the episode. Before all this happens, there is a nice little war of words between Ned and Cersei, where she warns him that when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. This episode is also notable for the assassination attempt on Dany and Khal Drogos subsequent speech where he vows to invade Westeros and claim the Iron Throne.
