The main character from start to finish, Enoch "Nucky" Thompson had been with audiences from the very beginning, and as observers of his endeavours, it was one hell of a ride.
As the five seasons of Boardwalk Empire unfolded, the life of Nucky Thompson was laid out for audiences to take in. When we first met the man, he was a charming spokesperson for rich and poor of his beloved city, and as the series progressed he became more and more corrupted and integral to mob violence.
But there was also a warm side to him. His involvement with Margaret Schroeder wasn't out of lust, but genuine concern and affection. He regretted taking the life of Jimmy Darmody, and felt guilt some responsibility for what happened to Gillian too. Even as a child, his life was just a cavalcade of tragedies and while that wouldn't go on to excuse some of the irredeemable things he did later on, we certainly did feel sympathy for the character.
In the end, just when he almost got out, he got what was coming to him in the form of all his misdeeds culminating in his death on his beloved boardwalk.
