Ranking Every Episode Of The Haunting Of Hill House
6. Episode 7: Eulogy
While the sixth episode of the series, Two Storms (we'll get there) revealed a bit of Hugh Crain's perspective, it doesn't get explored in depth until this episode.
After several episodes of hearing all about how awful the things were that happened to Mr. and Mrs. Crain in their final days in Hill House, it is unbelievably awesome to finally get to see them. Eulogy's past-set sequences revolve around Hugh dealing with the aftermath of the storm and finding out that Hill House is essentially ruined from water damage, from which he cannot find the source.
He takes it upon himself to fix the entire house alone and things go about as well as expected. He cuts his hand on a giant fan, in one of the series' most simple-yet-squirm-inducing moments of gore, and eventually discovers the body of William Hill, buried within the walls of the house.
Meanwhile, the present-set storyline revolves around the entire family attending Nell's actual funeral and benefits immensely from every single cast member's incredible performances. Most notably here, Timothy Hutton's portrayal of the older Hugh is pitch-perfect and anchors the entire storyline in the juxtaposition between his cautious joy at seeing his children all together again and his jaded sense of loss and despair.
