Ranking Every Episode Of The Haunting Of Hill House

5. Episode 4: The Twin Thing

The Haunting Of Hill House
Netflix

This is the part of the list where the episodes get flat-out spectacular.

The Twin Thing is Luke's episode and fills viewers in on some much-needed exposition regarding his drug addiction and tepid relationships with his siblings. Up until this point in the series, modern-day Luke has only been seen in brief glimpses in his siblings' stories, all of which painted him as a damaged and unreliable character, the type who would steal from his own brother to make some money for drugs.

But this episode strips away those cheap two-dimensional characterizations and goes to the depths of Luke's character in a way that turns him into one of the show's most compelling leads. The past-set sequences introduce some very interesting foundations upon which to build Luke's arc, as it explores how no one in the family other than Nell ever really believed him about anything.

This also leads to the introduction of the Bowler Hat Ghost, an eight-foot-tall floating man in a giant trench coat who comes to claim his bowler hat from Luke, and is the show's most nightmare-inducing creation.

The present-set storyline is equally strong here, if not stronger. Chronicling Luke's struggle to find his friend who's gone missing from rehab while also experiencing the sensation of death thanks to his mental connection to Nell, writer Scott Kosar crafts an incredibly compelling narrative that puts Luke through immeasurable internal and external conflict.
