Ranking Every Episode Of The Haunting Of Hill House
4. Episode 10: Silence Lay Steadily
The final episode in the series is just shy of perfect, in that it is essentially the best ending possible, right up until the final few minutes.
The bulk of Silence Lay Steadily is comprised of the Crain children finally facing the house that has haunted them for all these years. After nine full episodes of build-up, it is incredibly fulfilling to see the modern-day Crains in Hill House together.
The way the house infects their minds, forcing them to each have these internal showdowns with some of the supporting characters of the most important moments of their lives, is wonderful. An especially bright spot is when Shirley, the family's resident control freak, has to finally come face-to-face with the biggest mistake she ever made, in the form of cheating on her husband. The ensuing scene is wonderfully crafted and gives actress Elizabeth Reaser an incredible opportunity to go all in on her performance.
The final moments Steven and Hugh together in the house, as Hugh explains why he's killed himself and how the house is now Steven's responsibility are the perfect mix of melancholy and uplifting, with the final shot of Steven leaving Hill House with all the ghosts walking behind him serving as a perfect ending for the series.
But then it keeps going. The final minutes of the episode offer some sweet confirmations, like letting the audience know that Luke remained sober and that Shirley fessed up to her husband about her adultery, but its entirely unnecessary considering we just saw them overcome these demons earlier in Hill House.
