Ranking Every HBO Drama Series From Worst To Best
24. Westworld
So much about Westworld is great. The universe itself is incredible, with a scale and ambition nearly unmatched on TV. The cast is spectacular, with Anthony Hopkins, Thandiwe Newton, and particularly Ed Harris excelling in their roles. And the show has commendably high aims, tackling questions about the meaning of humanity and the like.
It managed to maintain an impressive level of quality for a full first season that was no mean feat of production. Dozens of characters were introduced; along with the alien setting itself, there were a lot of pieces to put together, and while the show was occasionally more complex than it could have been, this was a mystery worth persevering with.
As season two progressed, though, it began to appear that the show was only ever going to become more complicated for the sheer sake of doing so. Layers upon layers of complexity were pasted on, and the drama began to experience notable pacing issues.
The third season changed tact, which was refreshing for a while but we’re seeing the same issues creeping in. For fans of a puzzle to solve, Westworld remains great. For those looking for a more coherent drama, you’re best looking elsewhere.
