Ranking Every HBO Miniseries From Worst To Best

20. Watchmen

I May Destroy You
HBO

History will vindicate Zack Snyder’s much maligned, underrated adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel masterpiece. For all that’s good about Snyder’s film, though, it’s fair to say some of the changes he made from the source material were detrimental to the spirit of the story.

Damon Lindelof’s series rights many of those wrongs. It’s not an adaptation of the book, but rather a continuation of the story, with events taking place before and after the original story. Ozymandias is exiled on a moon of Jupiter following his apocalypse-averting decision to drop a giant squid alien on New York City.

Laurie Blake works for the FBI, and the whereabouts of Dr Manhattan is a thread that weaves throughout. Holding it all together is Regina King as Angela Abar, a vigilante police officer whose past intersects with a wave of white supremacist violence.

The social awareness and complex storytelling of Watchmen was a bold and effective decision, and the performances, King and Jeremy Irons as the aristocratic, entirely mad Ozymandias especially, are superb. It loses a bit of momentum in the final stretch, but it’s quality stuff all the same.
