Ranking Every Season Of American Horror Story From Worst To Best

4. Freak Show

American Horror Story
FX

The world of Freak Show was as colourful as it was terrifying, and Fräulein Elsa's cabinet of curiosities was a gift, as it gave us plenty of larger-than-life characters to fall in love with. As with most seasons of AHS, Freak Show suffered from pacing issues, and much of the show's dynamic was ruined when Twisty the Clown was killed off early on.

The show's most attractive quality was its wonderful protagonist, Elsa Mars. The theatrical performer is one of AHS' strongest creations, and her troubled backstory gave her so much more to fight for. As is the case with all of Jessica Lange's characters on the show, Elsa wasn't a good person - nor was she particularly likeable - but she was full of depth, and her desires made her an incredibly strong protagonist. We wanted Elsa to achieve her dreams. This narrative thread also gave us plenty of opportunities to watch in awe as Lange's character took to the stage to perform a variety of hits - most notably David Bowie's Life on Mars.

Freak Show undoubtedly has the best conclusion of any AHS season. There is no narrative left untied, and the writers paid to tribute to their leading lady by not only giving Elsa the ending that she deserved, but by giving Lange a beautiful farewell, as Elsa Mars' dreams of stardom were finally acheived.
