Ranking Every Season Of American Horror Story From Worst To Best
1. Asylum
The second season of American Horror Story - subtitled Asylum - dealt head-on with psychological horror, which was a far cry from the theatrical hauntings seen in the first season. Aliens aside, Asylum was grounded in realism, and focused on everyday horrors (such as mental illness and corruption), making it more terrifying than its predecessor (and successors, for that matter).
It has almost become an obligatory trope for AHS to feature a serial killer every year, but none were as compelling as Bloody Face. At the heart of Asylum's story, however, was conflicted nun Sister Jude, who wanted to make amends for her shortcomings in life. She attempted to put a stop to the corruption going on in the Briarcliff asylum, but would fall victim to the same methods of torture she'd previously used on her patients. Lange - as always - was mesmerising in the role.
Asylum remains American Horror Story's best offering, and it's highly unlikely that anything will ever match it. In terms of story, character development and setting, it's as close to perfection as one could ever hope to come. All of that aside though, Asylum was never going to be topped after that 'The Name Game' sequence.
