Ranking Every Season Of American Horror Story From Worst To Best

2. Coven

American Horror Story
FX

After Asylum, American Horror Story lightened things up for its third season. Coven was starkly different to anything that the series had given us at this point, and it was all the more enjoyable for it. Set in New Orleans, the showrunners were able to draw on the mythology of the location, bringing in not only standard magic for their narrative, but voodoo magic as well.

Lange was back in full form and delivered her greatest performance on the show as the fabulous Supreme witch, Fiona Goode. Much like Lange's Freak Show character, Fiona craved power (albeit in a different form to Elsa), and she would stop at nothing to get it, which provided this protagonist with a great objective - which drove the series. The additions of acting powerhouses Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett gave the show even more star power, and resulted in something rather, well, magical.

The narrative suffered a bit in the latter half, and the finale was a tad rushed, but Coven was the breath of fresh air that the AHS franchise was in need of. What's more, it proved that - horror series or not - the show doesn't need to be dark and depressing to explore disturbing themes. It's also worth noting that this particular season is largely responsible for turning AHS into the pop culture phenomenon it is today.
