Ranking Peter Kay TV Series From Worst To Best
3. Max & Paddy's Road To Nowhere
All of Kay’s five television
series exist within the same universe, as That Peter Kay Thing (linked to Car
Share through Mr. Softy Top) fed to Phoenix Nights (whose incompetent medium
Clinton Baptiste showed up on Britain’s Got the Pop Factor…), which in turn spun
off into Max & Paddy’s Road to Nowhere. This followed the escapades of two
club doormen, played by Kay and his childhood friend (and now Top Gear/A Question of Sport host) Paddy McGuinness.
Though it only ran for six episodes, the love that audiences had already built towards the characters, who were regular standouts for their escapades and seemingly random relationship (given their contrasting personalities) on Phoenix Nights, helped to make the show an instant hit, with Bolton traded for locations around the UK as the two went ‘on the run’ in a camper van.
By narrowing the focus of what was an ensemble cast down to just two characters, something did feel missing, but the natural chemistry between Kay and McGuinness was sufficient to make the series enjoyable enough, with ridiculous scenes like an A-Team inspired camper van recovery, a re-enactment of the ‘Let’s Hear It For the Boy’ sequence from Flashdance and the pair sawing down a speed camera (to the delight of fellow motorists) all remaining memorable to this day.
