Ranking Peter Kay TV Series From Worst To Best
2. Car Share
After Max &
Paddy ran its course in 2004, the next decade was comparatively quiet for Kay.
Aside from his one-off composition of Britain’s Got the Pop Factor, his only work
of note, bar voice acting and the occasional hosting gig, was his third
nationwide stand-up tour in 2010-11. This exemplified just how popular he
remained with the British population, with 128 nationwide dates selling out
after he initially planned to just do 20 shows in the Greater Manchester area.
His return to episodic television in 2015 was therefore much anticipated. Taking a different approach to his previous shows, in which locations played a huge part, Car Share restricted the action to the front seats of a Fiat 500 (bar fantasy sequences), depicting Kay and a colleague (played by long-time collaborator Sian Gibson, who’d appeared in minor roles in every previous series bar Max & Paddy) travelling to and from the supermarket that serves as their place of employment.
Scored almost entirely to music and adverts from the car’s radio, which often steered the course of the conversation, Car Share thrived at delivering kitchen sink humour, with John and Kayleigh’s mundane conversations veering off on weird and wonderful tangents to keep the laughs coming.
Concluded after 12 episodes, it remains to be seen if Car Share will be Kay’s farewell to television given his increased withdrawal from the spotlight. If it is, he’ll have certainly gone out with a bang.
