Ranking The Doctor Who Series Premieres From Worst To Best

8. New Earth (Series 2)

First broadcast: Saturday 15th April 2006 Doctor Who vowed to take viewers further than they'd ever gone before in the Series 2 premiere episode but, as it turns out, it really needn't have bothered. Not that New Earth is bad per se, but it's nowhere near the quality of the series premieres that came after it, and that rather important one that came before, which is why it's been ranked as the worst on this list. It's common knowledge that a 'bad' episode of Doctor Who is still actually pretty good, so don't be too offended if you hold this episode in high regard for establishing the now irreplaceable Tenth Doctor/Rose partnership. If it helps, they're its saving grace. Oh, and is Zoë Wanamaker, of course, who returned with gusto as Lady Cassandra from Series 1 to wreak yet more havoc as the scheming and self-proclaimed "last human". The ensuing body-swapping drama is almost too much to handle, though, but it helps somewhat to bear in mind that it was purposefully written to give David Tennant and Billie Piper the chance to stretch their comedic muscles. An interesting moral premise that's ultimately let down by an overriding sense of forced humour, but the perfect episode if you're ever in the mood for a bit of lighthearted relief. Be warned, though, because things will never be the same after you've seen the image of a cat in a nuns wimple.
