Recasting The Stargate Atlantis Reboot
4. Bill Hader As Dr. Rodney McKay
Dr. Rodney McKay, played by David Hewlett, was a selfish, narcissistic, sexist, cowardly man. Someone who you wouldn't believe could also be someone quite selfless and caring, willing to put aside his own feelings and ego for the good of the group, if not the entire galaxy.
McKay is perhaps Atlantis' most complex character, as he has so many different layers to his character. There is the simple ego on the surface that can lead to McKay's more negative traits, but below all that is someone who is a good person.
That's why one of the best actors that could portray McKay is Bill Hader. The SNL actor has gone through many different roles on TV and film and has been able to show his acting skills in many ways that would help flesh out McKay in a modern reboot.
Hader could keep McKay's sense of humor, his scientific mindset, and amazing problem-solving skills, along with his cowardice and greed. Hader could also help to bring out more of McKay's change over time.
Bill Hader as McKay could show how people change under stressful situations, learning to adapt in strange environments for survival, and how the true nature of heroes isn't always seen immediately on the surface, as it can take time to emerge for all to see.
