Red Dwarf: 5 Best Episodes

2. Meltdown €“ Series Four Episode Six

This episode is far from the best episode in most people€™s eyes but it€™s one of my personal favourites just for its sheer lunacy. The crew discover a planet with a breathable atmosphere and discover it is populated by wax androids of historical and fictional people. The evil wax-droids (including Hitler, Caligula, and the Boston Strangler) are at war with the good wax-droids (comprised almost entirely of holy men and intellectuals). Rimmer decides to take command of the good wax-droids and lead them to victory. He technically succeeds but only by wiping out every droid on the planet. As I said, this is one of my personal favourites for being wonderfully surreal and silly. In no other Red Dwarf episode would we have Marilyn Monroe, Gandhi, and Mother Teresa charging across a minefield, or Lister witnessing the execution of Winnie the Pooh. Best Scene: Rimmer inspecting his troops and discovering that Stan Laurel, Noel Coward, and Father Christmas are part of his army. Useless Trivia: The Matter Paddle used by the crew in this episode reappeared in Series Five€™s Demons And Angels where it was modified by Kryten to make two copies of whatever object it was used on.
