Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best

1. Series 5

Red Dwarf VIII
BBC

Relying heavily on Chris Barrie's comic skills and some truly classic storylines, series 5 is as perfect as it ever got for Red Dwarf and anyone who argues is going to make Mr Flibble very cross.

Early on Red Dwarf had displayed an interest in psychology, sometimes personifying different emotions and lack of emotions in interesting and always funny ways, but series 5 was the one to take that idea and really run with it. While all the cast had a chance to show different sides to their characters in the wonderful Demons & Angels, it's Rimmer who the series seems focused on. Holoship and Terrorform both give us a look at a character far more rounded than he first appeared, and his admission in The Inquisitor is nothing short of heartbreaking.

But it's Back To Reality that's the standout episode here. A concept so good it could have been saved for a Red Dwarf movie, this painted the boys as a bunch of smegheads who've been bumbling around a video game for four years. While everyone remembers Dwayne Dibbley, it's Timothy Spall who shines brightest in this episode despite having a real hard time filming it.

"What a bunch of twonks!"

After hearing that you are what you eat, Mik took a good hard look at his diet and realised he might just be a szechuan spare rib alongside prawn fried rice.
