Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
10. The Promised Land
The latest fixing of Red Dwarf was only broadcast on April 9th 2020, and it's honestly a really fun ride. The jokes are on point though perhaps grown a little bit since the early days (the past few seasons felt worryingly left behind), and the characterizations were as tight as ever, showing the loneliness these guys feel without ever dropping into melancholy and taking us away from the comedy of a situation.
Taking us back to the Cat species arks that departed Red Dwarf before Lister awoke in The End, we see how the Cat culture surrounding their religious beliefs in Lister as their god have led them to yet another war. Some serious thoughts about theology are hidden amongst the jokes here, and the action scenes are beyond anything Red Dwarf has had a chance to do since it began.
So, why is it so low on this list? Well, first a quick SPOILER WARNING for the rest of this paragraph. The main antagonist is revealed to be Cat's brother despite the Cat Arks leaving Red Dwarf hundreds of years earlier. It's a little thing, but this snub to the established continuity will be a major bugbear to most longterm fans.
