Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
9. Red Dwarf X
Back to Earth may have been the first shot at reviving Red Dwarf on Dave, but it was series ten when the show spiritually came back. Gone was the attempt at creating an overlong cinematic story, and back was self-contained half-hour sitcom episodes This represented the true resurrection of Red Dwarf, and whilst it may not have been the stablest of returns, it was still a welcome one.
The biggest danger that series ten faced was a lurch too far towards nostalgia. The show couldn't feel like it was just an attempt to cash-in on the rose-tinted memories of fans, it needed to offer something new. Thankfully, Doug Naylor was not planning on restructuring the show's principle setup (as seen in series eight). Instead, we see the main cast return to do what they do best: slob around space and insult each other. Hey, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
This series is a mixed bag of old jokes and receding hairlines, but it was the finale, 'The Beginning', that proved the biggest highlight. A smart, funny episode that would've been a worthwhile conclusion to the Red Dwarf saga. If the show hadn't been recommissioned, that is.
