Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
3. Red Dwarf II
Before Starbug, there was the Blue Midget. A small ship that opened its doors in the second series of Red Dwarf. Because the biggest problem Grant and Naylor faced with the show in series one, was the setting of Red Dwarf itself. It was a gigantic ship that restricted the characters, and so, it was time to set them free.
This proved a successful move for the show, as it now meant much more exploration of the deep dark recess of space for the Dwarfers. Which meant new characters were more easily found too, and one such character was Kryten. The android made his first appearance in this series, except he was played by David Ross. The "Classic Kryten" in the form of Robert Llewellyn would takeover the role in series three and beyond.
This was the series that offered the vast potential of the Red Dwarf universe. Although still primarily a Lister/Rimmer double-act, series two gave prominence in Red Dwarf to Norman Lovett's senile super-computer Holly in the excellent 'Queeg' ("We're talking jape of the decade. We are talking April, May, June, July and August fool..").
And again, it was a series that wasn't just about the laughs. 'Thanks For The Memory' was borderline an emotional drama at times. One where the audience, much like Lister does in the episode, actually start to feel sorry for Arnold J. Rimmer.
