Red Dwarf: Every Series Ranked From Worst To Best
2. Red Dwarf IV
By 1991, when series four was broadcast, Red Dwarf was at the height of its popularity. The show had truly metamorphosed into the juggernaut comedy show we've come to love, but it was still not afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve.
Episodes like 'Camille', despite silly in nature, offered more emotional tunnels into characters like Kryten. Although we had the introduction of silicon heaven for our favourite subservient mechanoid in the previous series, Camille offered an unexpected shot at romance for Kryten. Albeit, with a big green alien blob. But hey, love's blind.
But it was episodes like 'White Hole' ("So, what is it?"), 'Justice', and the brilliant anti-war piece, 'Meltdown' (which the BBC refused to show on TV during the first Gulf War), that cemented this series into classic territory. We even had our first glimpse of the alternate, better version of Rimmer in 'Dimension Jump' ("Smoke me a kipper...").
The introduction of "Ace" Rimmer was like a un-wanted mirror for Arnold, one which he believed was there to accentuate his failings. But the twist that "Ace" was the one who had the more difficult upbringing than the smeghead version of Rimmer was pure genius.
