Rick And Morty: Every Season Four Episode Ranked Worst To Best
9. Never Ricking Morty
Rick and Morty used to have the ability to seem both effortlessly clever and funny at the same time, yet the opener for the second half of season four missed this mark completely. With way too many meta jokes, addressing as many criticisms as possible within the space of 20 minutes, the episode just came off as trying too hard to be smart.
This came at a detriment to the episode itself, as the titular characters spent just about the entire time explaining what was going to happen in the narrative, and referencing every storytelling technique used. Meta jokes work a lot better when they are used sparingly, not when there are too many to count.
Even the would be fan service of bringing back both Bird and Phoenixperson, Tammy, Snowball, and Evil Morty didn't work for the episode. The poor outing from the show was ultimately wrapped up by a mistimed, distasteful joke about the Coronavirus pandemic, rounding off a very forgettable adventure for Rick and Morty.
This certainly wasn't worth the six month wait.
