It's easy to forget with the show now in its fifth season, but eight years ago at the very beginning, the Smith family had a dog. Snuffles wasn't a bad dog by any stretch, but Jerry was a lazy owner, and instead of training him to go outside for his business, he asked for Rick to help with his crazy technology.

Like the Meeseeks Box, Rick only offered this solution to Jerry to essentially shut him up and stop bothering him. He belittled his son-in-law, then fit Snuffles with the device that would, as the name suggests, amplify the creature's cognitive faculties.

At first, this just allowed the dog to understand simple commands like shake and roll over, and to go to the bathroom. However, he soon began to feel emotions, and after adding more batteries to the device himself, he became smarter.

The increase in brain capacity saw Snuffles create an army of dogs each with their own Cognition Amplifier, and after seeing the cruel subjugation of his species, tried to overthrow humanity. Not quite what Rick had in mind, but the technology is still undeniably impressive.
