3. We Loved: The New Characters
Even though we there are some missing faces from season one, 'Pure as the Driven' does introduce three noteworthy new characters. The first two somewhat come together Dr. Frederick Travers and Joseph Merrick, otherwise know as the Elephant Man. Made famous in the play/film (depending how you ingest your stories), the tale of the Elephant Man and his doctor friend Travers is famous. The inclusion of such iconic figures is a stroke of genius that makes you even more excited when you realise that, more than a simple cameo, Merrick and Travers are going to play a key part in the following episodes. As many people know, Merrick died in his sleep. Will Ripper Street attempt to weaver this into the plot is Merrick in danger? Season two can only get better as we wait for the payoff to those questions. The third new character is Detective Inspector Jedidiah Shine of K Division. From his fantastically evocative name right down to his superb choice of trousers, Shine is a villain worthy of Reid and co. Corrupt and charismatic, Joseph Mawle plays him perfectly. We can't wait to see just how far he will go to stay ahead of Reid's clutches.
