Riverdale Season 3: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Big Fun'

Downs...

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that the best musical TV episodes are those that use the music to express what is going on in each character's mind. The songs become tools to get the protagonists to where they need to be, aiding in their journey of self-discovery and letting the viewers know what they're dealing with.

With that in mind, it's easy to see why Veronica, who had just discovered that her parents were separating, was the perfect candidate to sing "Lifeboat" - a subtle ballad about devastation and loneliness. Even if it wasn't, the performance was preceded by a scene between her and Hiram, who denounced his own family because there was no longer any trust between them. So, it's safe to say that we knew what she was going through. We all knew what she was going through.

However, that didn't stop Kevin from breaking down how she was feeling by brutally reminding Veronica that her world was falling apart. "I was going to talk about the devastating loneliness that your character feels at this particular moment," he said with an absurdly straight face, "but it seems like you're already there so... take it away."

Of course, this was supposed to be a subtle way for the writers to remind us that Veronica was the perfect candidate for the song (you know in case we couldn't infer that from the really obvious devastation she experienced in the episode), but having it come from Kevin was all sorts of wrong. If they absolutely felt the need to include this expository conversation, couldn't they have just had Kevin start describing the scene before Veronica interrupted him with something like "already there, Kev"?

This wasn't subtle at all and ended up portraying Kevin as heartless - something we know that he really isn't.
