Riverdale Season 3: 4 Ups & 2 Downs From 'Big Fun'
1. Lady In Red
While plenty of the episode's stories seamlessly went hand-in-hand with Heathers' music, one did not.
Cheryl and Toni's falling out played a major role in the episode and, for the most part, it fitted in perfectly ("Seventeen" anyone?). However, there was one scene that, although it was performed well, ended up coming off as rather forced.
Outraged by the fact that Toni wore red (which, in case you didn't know, Cheryl "invented"), the leader of the River Vixens suddenly launched into a tirade about how her ex-girlfriend needed to leave the school before Monday at first bell (or else!!!). Sorry, what?
Again, this was all simply done to create an argument "major" enough so that Toni could belt out the first few lines of "Dead Girl Walking" and make them seem relevant to the plot. But it was problematic, at best.
While the ultimatum was totally in line with Cheryl's character, Toni's decision to randomly wear red felt incredibly contrived. Since showing up, Toni has dressed in all-black and, quite frankly, rocked her own look. Why would she now suddenly go for one of the brightest colours possible, especially if it was Cheryl's colour? Sure, she's been confrontational in the past, but she hasn't gone out of her way to hurt somebody she cared about and, as a result, this felt like an out-of-character move that took place for no reason other than the fact that the song required it to.
