Riverdale Season 3 Premiere: 5 Ups & 3 Downs From 'Labor Day'

2. The New Mystery (And Jughead's Connection To It)

Riverdale Gargoyle King
The CW

Riverdale is bursting at the seams with storylines as it is, what with Archie's imprisonment, Veronica's vendetta against her father and Jughead taking over his father's mantle, but the show simply wouldn't be complete without a new mystery for our protagonists (and us, for that matter) to become engrossed in. The show is built on storylines of this nature. 'Who Killed Jason Blossom?' and 'Who Is The Black Hood?' provided rather compelling narrative arcs for the previous two seasons, and the mysterious Gargoyle King looks to be at the centre of Season 3.

Dilton and Ben are involved somehow, and Jughead discovers the two boys engaging in some sort of satanic ritual in the woods. The writers are keeping their cards very close to their chest in regards to this storyline, which leaves us with plenty of room to speculate. Involving Jughead is very clever on the writer's part, because the character is the show's best mystery solver and, as interesting as the Serpents storyline is, it's great to see him doing what he does best once more.

Perhaps it's too early for a theory, but the almost religious connotations associated with this Gargoyle King could possibly link this plot thread to the Coopers' new psychiatrist, Edgar.
